Book Launch March 20, 2025: Jes McCutchen & Sam Ryan

Join us for a dual book launch of 'words my friends have thrown away' by Sam Ryan and 'Starmen Poems' by Jes McCutchen

Join us for the book launch of "words my friends have thrown away" by Sam Ryan and "Starmen Poems" by Jes McCutchen. These two Tulsa writers will be releasing their books at the Positive Space art gallery featuring the installation "Geraldine Hart: A Restrospective" by Jes McCutchen.

The launch will take place on March 20, 2025 at 6pm central time, and will include readings, additional artists and an open mic.

Taking world-building and character development into the physical realm, "Geraldine Hart: A Retrospective," is an art gallery-based museum covering the biography of Ms. Hart (she/her), a human who participated in several interstellar exchange programs and research exhibitions before Earth was once again cut off from the rest of the galaxy.

Curating artifacts from across Ms. Hart's lifetime, Jes McCutchen takes on the role of archivist and biographer, telling the story of one of 20th century Earth's most ambitious explorers. The exhibit will be a multimedia endeavor featuring models of the planets Ms. Hart visited, poetry she wrote and her personal effects, along with a pop culture section and artifacts from her childhood.

"Words That My Friends Have Thrown Away is a vital book. It's a book where each story feels fresh but also so important. Every character feels full of life and leaps off the page. There was never a moment where I didn't feel something from the story."

Samantha Ryan writes with an economy of words. Instead of coming off terse, she brilliantly creates space and light with the exact right ones inspired by words her friends threw away. The book hums with life. We share moments with her beautiful characters from a shared joke between two husbands to someone on a ledge contemplating ending their life. These quiet moments of triumph ring true because she incorporates the harsh realities of the world and the humanity of the people we spend a few pages with. As Rogue in the book points out while staring in the mirror, "It's beautiful ... if only for a moment.
